First Grade at Saint Paschal Baylon School is a special academic year of enormous and very visible strides in students' education/formation. It is a year of important development and transitions for our First Grade students, such as: learning to sit in individual desks with all their own supplies at hand; being responsible for their own work; managing basic weekly homework; and learning how to become organized with their new text books and folders. First Graders build upon the foundation set for them in Kindergarten - they will continue to build on the skills learned in Kindergarten, while advancing academically and in their Catholic faith formation here at SPBS.
During our First Grade year, students will not only learn to read with more fluidity and fluency, he or she will even enter the exciting world of reading chapter books, while getting to know characters from different book series. SPBS First Grade students will learn to add and subtract with proficiency. Students will be excited to discover the power of the written word, not only by writing stories he or she creates, but also by writing about the stories read together in class, via our school wide writing program and rubrics. By exploring some of the mysteries of Science, students learn to better understand, appreciate and respect the world around us. This challenging and exciting First Grade curriculum is taught by a credentialed and experienced teacher, in collaboration daily with a classroom Teacher Aide.
At Saint Paschal Baylon School, our First Grade students learn about Jesus and His life, and what we believe as Catholics in simple terms; attend Mass every Friday with the whole school; prepare a school Mass once a year; and participate in many prayer services and liturgical celebrations together with other grade levels.
First Graders venture outside of the classroom on field trips to support curriculum, and attend a live fine arts performance. Students are also introduced to a world full of different cultures through our classroom curriculum. In addition to receiving an academic program based on excellence in standards-based academics and Catholic faith formation, our First Graders also participate in weekly Enrichment Classes: Spanish, Art, Music, Library, Computers/Technology, and Physical Education.
SPBS First Graders are enthusiastic learners, who thrive on learning new ideas and gaining new information. At Saint Paschal Baylon School, we work hard to capture this inherent enthusiasm and excitement for learning, and to instill in our students a love of learning that will grow and continue throughout their years of schooling, while collaborating with parents in building a strong foundation of faith.
