Third Grade at Saint Paschal Baylon School (SPBS) is an exciting and transitional year filled with both fun and new concepts. Our Third Grade students study cursive writing, multiplication, and division in a challenging academic environment of excellence, based on the Common Core State Standards and Archdiocesan standards. SPBS believes in educating the "whole child", therefore our Third Graders attend an extensive variety of Enrichment Classes:Spanish, Art, Music, Library, Computers/Technology, and Physical Education.

 

Our  very experienced, credentialed Third Grade teacher is assisted in presenting a comprehensive and challenging curriculum to the students by a credentialed Teacher Aide, who works in the classroom until Noon every day. We prepare each of our Third Grade students to experience success both now, and in their future grade levels. Third Grade at SPBS is a special time as students prepare to leave behind the Primary Grades, step forth into the Intermediate Grades, and anticipate receiving Report Card "letter grades" for the first time next year in our Fourth Grade. It is the students' final year in the SPBS “lower building”. 

 

For our 100% Catholic student body, Catholic faith formation is inculcated throughout all aspects of the Third Grade year, including: participation in weekly school wide Masses, liturgical events, student-led Stations of the Cross during Lent, prayer services, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, conflict resolution based on gospel values, and the formal/academic study of our Catholic faith.

At Saint Paschal Baylon School Third Grade is also a time for discovering new works of literature and continuing participation in the school wide writing program. Together the class reads several works of fiction, including: "The Mouse and the Motorcycle" by Beverly Cleary, "Charlotte’s Web" by E.B. White, and "Danny, Champion of the World" by Roald Dahl. Our Third Grade teacher also reads several novels aloud to the class throughout the year, working to foster a passion for reading within each Third Grader. Students participate as well in the software-based, individualized "Accelerated Reader" (Renaissance Reading) program, in order to help enhance higher level critical thinking skills and reading comprehension in each student.

SPBS Third Grade students study in-depth about the major U.S. landforms, and how Native American cultures lived and adapted within these landforms. The class recreates several forms of Native American art, visits the Chumash Interpretive Center on an annual field trip, and experiences first-hand how the Chumash utilized the local tide pools with our annual class field trip to Leo Carrillo State Beach. SPBS Third Grade students are exposed to the fine arts, when they attend a live performance at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza.
