Students at Saint Paschal Baylon School (SPBS) attend weekly Computer/Technology classes in our state-of-the-art Computer Lab. In addition to wireless iPads and SmartBoards in every classroom, our students have daily access to 23 iMac computers in the Computer Lab, utilizing both Office and Apple software.

 

SPBS students have daily cross-curricular access to iPads, which are available for student classroom use via our two wireless iPad carts. The iPads are loaded with grade-specific apps in various subject areas. There are also dedicated iPads in the Kindergarten classroom for use by our youngest students, in conjunction with their "Starfall" Language Arts phonics-based reading and writing programs. We provide eight dedicated iPads in the school Library, which are utilized by our students to take "Accelerated Reader" quizzes, through our software-based Reading Renaissance reading enrichment program for Grades K-8.

 

The SPBS computer/technology curriculum is based on the National Education Technology Standards (NETS): it is designed to support grade level curriculum in collaboration with the teachers. The SPBS Technology Program is therefore integrated with and provides cross-curricular support for each class's various academic programs, projects, and curricula throughout the school year. SPBS employs iPrism to restrict potential inappropriate Internet access by our students while on campus.

 

In order to help protect our school's huge and ever-increasing investment in current technology, SPBS has recently installed a school wide security system in all rooms, with a special focus on providing security for our Computer Lab. This cutting-edge security/alarm system includes access to armed responders, monitored digital video cameras, and motion detectors which the principal is able to monitor and control from on and off-site.

 

All students in Grades K-8 visit the SPBS Computer Lab on a regular basis, where they are taught in small groups by our full-time Computer/Technology teacher. Each grade level has a computer/technology curriculum designed for them, specifically in order to continue to increase students' computer skills and proficiency, including: keyboarding; CAD drawing; code writing; animation; power point; Word; Excel; Google Docs; and other programs. 

 

Our SBPS technology curriculum is designed to help strengthen the students' reading, writing, critical thinking, and language arts skills, while helping prepare them for success in a rapidly- evolving world filled with changing technology now and in the future. We believe that our SPBS Computer Technology Program will help provide an ever-expanding world of information and increased skill sets to each of our SPBS students. This global access through technology will in turn help to broaden our students' abilities, horizons, and understanding.
